Do I have to get in shape to do Pilates?

Absolutely not. Any level of fitness is the perfect place to start your Pilates program. Pilates will get you in shape – most likely the best shape of your life if you do it regularly.  Bolder Pilates loves working with beginners so they can learn the right way for the most effective and efficient workouts.

What’s the difference between Pilates and yoga, anyway?

Pilates and Yoga share similar principles and benefits, but the execution is different. Pilates has a mat-work component but also utilizes resistance training from specially designed apparatus to tone the entire body. Yoga focuses on holding postures on the mat, and more on developing flexibility. While Pilates is very focused and encourages a strong mind-body connection, yoga is more overtly a spiritual practice. If you want a program that improves flexibility while toning your muscles – especially those abs – then Pilates is probably the choice for you.  Pilates and yoga are an excellent complement to one another.

Can I do Pilates if I’m injured?

Yes. Pilates is inherently rehabilitative. It is widely used by the medical community and in physical therapy clinics for its ability to strengthen and stabilize the muscles of the body without any stress on the joints.  Bolder Pilates specializes in using Pilates to help clients prevent and recover from injury.

Can I do it when I’m pregnant?

Yes!  Pilates is one the best things you can do to prepare your body for the process of birth. It trains the muscles that your body will need to recruit in your delivery and help you recover to your pre-pregnancy body much more quickly. Keeping the core muscles strong and long will also help prevent tearing of the abdominal wall. Just make sure you train with someone who has experience working with pregnant women.

How many times a week do I need to do Pilates to see results?

Every body is different and responds differently to exercise programs. I believe Joseph Pilates himself said it best…” in 10 sessions you’ll feel a difference, in 20 sessions, you’ll see a difference, and in 30, you’ll have a whole new body”.  He was right, but, like anything, how quickly you see results will be up to you… two to three times per week is recommended.

What’s up with those weird machines?

Most people think they look like medieval torture devices, but they are actually a lot of fun to use, and quite comfortable. Invented by Joseph Pilates, these hand-crafted pieces of equipment are constructed with variable spring resistance, which builds long and lean musculature and allows for synergistic muscle engagement. The equipment tones and strengthens the whole body while focusing on proper alignment, increasing range of motion & flexibility.

Should I start on the mat, or on the reformer?

The Pilates method incorporates work on the mat as well as various pieces of equipment to strengthen, lengthen, and tone all the muscles of the body.  Usually, clients will start on the mat to learn the fundamental principles of Pilates that will be critical in the effectiveness and efficiency of the work as a whole.

I travel a lot. Can I still do Pilates?

Absolutely.  Although it is recommend to take some private lessons to create a foundation for the work in your body.  Bolder Pilates will design home routines for clients who travel a lot, so they can do it wherever they are. Also, almost every gym now offers pilates classes you can drop in to, and we are always happy to provide clients with references to qualified instructors in the area they will be in.

What alternatives do you offer to private training?

We offer semi-private training (2 people), which is more affordable and fun to do with a friend. We have recently expanded our space to offer small group classes as well. A group setting injects camaraderie into your workout while maintaing a nice balance of personal attention too. There are mat classes as well as Equipment (Tower/Pole) classes. We still recommend beginning with a few private sessions to learn the fundamentals of Pilates so you can progress into classes with confidence.
